If a case of wine contains 12 bottles then by my guessing, two cases would be sufficient to provide each person with roughly four glasses each with some to spare. I'm keen to do this as cheaply as possible due to budget constrictions but also, don't want to run out of wine! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Since you asked…8 cases minimum.
As an absolute minimum you want half a bottle per person which would equate to 15 bottles. Hence, 2 cases (24 bottles) should be plenty. Fingers crossed that there are no accidents or breakages!!
I trust that you will also be offering non-alcoholic alternatives such as mineral water and orange juice??
two would be just right as you want to figure 1/2 bottle per guest.
They would be pretty small glasses. Remember some people will be driving, So yes 2 cases should be OK. 6 red 6 rose and rest white (dry/medium) but get in some fruit juices and/or soda and mineral water.

if its for weight watchers, or some heath group, you can probably get away with a case
if its for golfers, drinkers, wine enthusiasts, matchmaking, etc, you probably want to have 2 cases or more

Given your thoughts about not wanting to run out of wine but remaining reasonable in cost and consumption, your choice of 2 cases is just about right. If you knew that the majority were light drinkers, you could go less. Also, remember that the sophistcation of the “audience” contributes to the results. A sophisticated group with poor wine to drink, should generally drink less. Good wine would have the opposite results. A unsophisticated group (when it comes to wine), may drink anything. Sometimes people are just not “into” wine and will opt to not drink…or choose to go out to get a beer or a cocktail. All in all, your guess appears wise and safe.
If poured correctly, a bottle of wine should yield five glasses of wine. I do Know where you live and what your DUI laws are, however most people should probably not have more than three glasses of wine. I would go for a case and an half. Also keep a time limit on the reception and stop pouring at that time.
