Does Drinking Water After Drinking Wine Make You Drunker, or Get You Drunk Again, and Why?

by Sommelier on February 11, 2010

I've been a fan of wine for a long time. I have many friends that say wine is great, because after drinking wine, you can drink water, and get drunker or drunk again. Or after a night of drinking wine, in the morning if you drink water, you'll get drunk again.

Being an avid wine fan, I have yet to ever experience this amazing phenomenon. So, is it true, and if so, why does it work.

I am an avid wine drinker and this is simply not true. Period. The end.

Drinking water with wine has never made me drunker. There are a lot of myths out there to keep people from doing certain things.

No, that’s not true…if anything, it clears your system faster (if you drink lots of water), and prevents you from becoming dehydrated, so you won’t have a hangover.

If anything, the water slows the absorbsion of the wine and may allow you to drink more, but the point of drinking wine is not to get smashed, but to enjoy the complexity and craftsmanship of the winemaster

otherwise, you might as well drink Boone’s Farm or Ripple

Never heard that one. Are you sure their “water” isn’t gin or vodka?

Drinking water along the way will help alleviate a hangover the next day, so I’m not sure how that gets you drunk.
