Renowned Austrian glassmaker Riedel designs the shape of each glass to most fully enhance the wine within. An excellent, full-bodied red needs a broad surface area for full appreciation of its merits--thus, the Maxi Burgundy Grand Cru glass came into being. By far the most voluminous, most spectacular glass the company produces, this maxi from the Sommeliers line holds a whopping 134 ounces and stands 15 inches tall. This giant is not for the faint of heart. p Made in Austria, the Maxi Burgundy Grand Cru is mouth-blown of 24-percent lead crystal for exceptional clarity and brilliance. The seven-inch girth allows a red wine's bouquet to fully develop, while the curved lip emphasizes fruit flavors by directing the wine directly onto the front palate. Wines recommended for this glass include Burgundy, Pinot Noir, Barbaresco, Beaujolais Grand Cru, Nebbiolo, and Barolo. Acclaimed for its innovative 1958 design, the 37-ounce version of this glass is on permanent display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Sommeliers crystal should be washed by hand to ensure longevity and to keep the glass surface free of detergent residue that can affect wine taste. I--Ann Bieri/I
